The best part about our Jefferson County Fair & Rodeo is that we try hard to make it an event your family can participate in. With this in mind, we have worked several suggestions into the schedule this year.

The new Department J (only found in Fair Entry) is all about pets! You can enter your dog in an agility course, demonstrate its obedience, or dress it up in the new costume class. The open class dog competition will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 21 at 10:30 a.m. in the park. The open class cat show will be Friday, Aug. 23 at 6:00 p.m. in the 4-H show ring.

Last year, the Whitehall Garden Club helped kids design floral displays to enter into the fair. The turnout was amazing, and the event will be back by popular demand — from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday in Volunteer Hall. The Garden Club will supply flowers but asks kids to bring a container approximately 4 to 6 inches tall. They’re encouraged to bring containers that are not traditional vases — such as a toy dump truck, a favorite mug, or a vintage soup can. Have your kid snoop around the house and get creative!

Kids can also participate in the veggie/fruit creation station. This year the vegetable of choice will be broccoli. There will be plenty of broccoli, glue guns, pipe cleaners, wire and other craft items to turn broccoli into original creations. These floral and craft masterpieces will be judged and displayed at the fair.

We also received feedback that there need to be more activities for older kids. On that front, Dave and Carrie Schell from Dave’s 32 oz. will host an ax throwing tournament, Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Parents need not worry: the axes are plastic! We’ll have age divisions for kids 8-13 and 14-18. Winners will receive baskets filled with fun gift cards and prizes! Bonus: There will be inspiring ax-throwing music in the background by Boulder’s own Depot Hill rock band.
