Woman charged with attempted deliberate homicide in northern Jefferson County incident

A woman who claimed self-defense has been charged with felony attempted deliberate homicide after a May 3 incident on Grouse Ridge Road in northern Jefferson County.

Courtney Norman initially said she had run over her boyfriend after he tried to shoot her. She claimed she had discovered he was cheating on her and when she tried to leave she hit his truck, leading him to get a gun. That story did not hold up under investigation, though, law enforcement officers said.

When deputies reached the home, the boyfriend was in the location where he had been run over, suffering from several broken bones, including a femur. The gun described by Norman was not near the victim, they said. A search found it where he said he kept it, in a case upstairs.

A K-9 search did not uncover any other firearms on the property. Investigators determined the victim had not dragged himself to put away the gun and return to the site of the incident, says court charging documents.

The victim said Norman kicked and hit his pickup, struck him with her vehicle, backed up and hit him again. Norman pleaded not guilty in a May 24 district court appearance. A $100,000 bond set in the justice court was continued pending a May 31 district court bond hearing.

In a separate case, Beau Jacob Bernhardt entered a plea of guilty to misdemeanor negligent endangerment. He was sentenced to one year in jail, all suspended, and fined $1000 plus ordered to pay a $1000 contribution to the Jefferson County Task Force. Court surcharges and fees of $75 were also assessed.
