Whitetail Road reconstruction uncovers ancient site

A Montana Department of Transportation project to reconstruct and widen Whitetail Road has uncovered an ancient archaeological site, one of only a few of its kind in Montana.

Archeologists so far have found roughly 200 usable artifacts such as arrowheads, spear tips and other items made of chert, obsidian, basalt and other materials.

The site, located by and named after Rocky Canyon Creek, is one of very few stratified sites in Montana that have been excavated, according to archaeologist David Ferguson of GCM Services, Inc.
