Wearing masks

I watched the Jan. 5 County Commissioners meeting on Zoom and would like to comment.

They said that if anyone is concerned about others not wearing a mask, they should avoid that person. I would do that, except when I go to the post office and grocery store, other people are often not wearing masks. So, do I not get my mail or groceries? I have politely asked them to put on a mask and they refuse.

Also, if mask wearing is mandated for the county employees for their safety, should it not be mandated for others? Is not the health of the general public just as important?

As they heard Pam Hanna of the County Health Department report, cases here continue to be prevalent, and deaths continue to happen. In addition, many extra county dollars are being spent on the County Health Department as they continue to cope with the increase in cases caused by non-mask wearers.  Would not a simple mandate be a better use of tax dollars?

A mask-less man at the meeting spoke of his “freedom.” In the U.S., a person’s freedom ends when it infringes on the right of others. Someone risking the health of others is an infringement, just as smoking in public is.  And there are many laws prohibiting smoking in certain areas.

I hope the Commissioners reconsider the ordering of masks for all of Jefferson County for the benefit of everyone.
