VENTURING OUT FOR A WINTER ESCAPE… Locals take advantage of snowy slopes

RELATED

Winter is a great time to get out into Montana’s forest for some recreation, and the hills of Jefferson County offer some wonderful opportunities for quiet, uncrowded escapes. Among pursuits followed by locals are cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.

While it requires planning and preparation, winter recreation can be invigorating and rewarding. Dressed appropriately with the proper equipment, even 10 degree weather can be fun for those active on the snow. Groomed ski trails around Elkhorn are a fairly well-kept secret for those unfamiliar, perhaps intentionally for those who love the quiet and solitude.

Other trails around the area forests can be found online at fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5052381.pdf. The site includes information on trail length, difficulty and access. Information on cross country trail options in other parts of Montana can also be found online, with details on short day trips and bigger trips that include overnight stays.
