Two weeks before skijoring, (nearly) all is in place

Modest piles of snow await construction of a skijoing track at the Jefferson County fairgrounds.

All the pieces are beginning to come together: The fairgrounds are being prepped, competitors are registering, and musical acts and food vendors are lined up. All that is missing for this year’s Skijoring The Big Rock event in Boulder is…snow.

That’s not incidental: Skijoring is a sporting event that combines horse riding skills with skiing. On snow. Teams of two competitors each, a rider on horseback and a skier, work together to navigate a slalom course, competing on time.

As of last weekend, the skijoring track at the fairgrounds was marked out with shallow snow piles, but otherwise was pretty bare. And the weather forecast for the next two weeks features mostly cold temperatures but little, if any, frozen precipitation.
