Tow truck drivers deserve recognition

RELATED

As a past paramedic, I’m working to bring attention to another first responder that is rarely recognized or thanked. We usually do not value our tow truck drivers. They too face the horrors of every bad accident scene; get called out at all hours of the night and work in the worst weather, longer than any other first responders.

More tow truck drivers are killed or injured every year on these calls than police or fire personnel. Why? Because these brave heroes are usually left to finish their jobs alone. First, ambulances leave, then police and fire follow suit. But the wrecker person (or crew) is left there alone, with no wall of flashing lights commanding attention for them and no fire trucks or police cars to block and slow down traffic protecting them as they work.

Tow truck drivers stay cleaning up glass, oil and debris off the road, keeping us all safe. They clear the disabled vehicles off the roads so we can drive on them without danger. Being out on these scenes alone while many drivers go speeding by, ignorantly refusing to slow down and move over makes the job highly dangerous for someone’s father, mother or loved one. So please, the next time you see a tow truck driver, tip your hat to them. They deserve our utmost appreciation and respect. Show your appreciation for tow truck drivers by slowing down and moving over. Let’s help send them all home to their families.
