Many of you may be aware of the story of Don Quixote, the hero of Cervantes’ novel The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha, written in the early 1600’s. The plot revolves around the adventures of a member of the lowest nobility, named Alonso Quijano, who reads so many chivalric romances that he loses his mind and decides to become a knight-errant to revive chivalry under the name Don Quixote de la Mancha.
Like Don Quixote, many of our Montana Legislators are on a crusade to impose their world view and values on all the citizens of Montana. Their right-wing pseudo-Christian nationalism is here to protect us from — guess who? — ourselves.
They base this crusade on several myths and distorted beliefs. They think, for instance, that the United States was founded as a “Christian Nation.” More on this in a minute. They also think the Judicial branch of the government needs radical reform, since the court system continues to find unconstitutional many of the laws they pass in the name of their world view. We’ll deal with this also.
