Third state title cements JHS golf dynasty

Jefferson High School’s boys golf team last week won its second consecutive Class B state title and third in four years, solidifying one of the great sports runs in school history.

At Marias Valley course in Shelby, the Panthers pulled away from the field on Day Two to beat second-place Three Folks by 20 strokes, 654 to 674. Malta was third, followed by Colstrip, Manhattan, and Missoula Loyola in the top five.

Likely the only team at the meet without an available golf course, the Panthers found ingenious ways to practice even when unable to play on a real course. They hit drives into a net set up on the football field and chipped into car tires laid out on the field. The team occasionally traveled to Helena to practice, but most of the players found ways to practice even on off days.
