The pain of pig parting

After lovingly raising two piglets for the past five months, 9-year-old Natalie Schmidt has begun to realize, as the upcoming 4-H animal auction has neared, that her growing attachment to her porcine wards may be problematic.

“I don’t want to sell either of them,” the Boulder youth said of Willy and Pinky, which she and her mother Branna bought in March from a ranch in Augusta. “I want to have my papa buy Willy, bring them back to this place, and then I can do it again and again and again.”

When asked what she wanted to do again, Natalie said “just raising them, watching them grow.”
