June is Men’s Health Month, and as a physical therapist, I often see firsthand how hesitant many men can be to seek care for their health concerns. Whether it’s skipping regular health checkups or delaying treatment for injuries, statistics show that nearly 50% of men may avoid seeing a physical therapist for chronic pain or sports injuries.
Some may even skip recommended physical therapy visits following surgery on joints like the knee, hip, shoulder, or others. This reluctance can lead to unnecessary pain, prolonged recovery, or even decreased mobility.
There’s a saying we use in physical therapy: The more you move, the better your health. It’s a simple truth with profound implications. As movement experts, my colleagues and I tailor our care to each individual’s anatomy, medical condition, and physical health goals. Our aim is to help patients avoid surgery, minimize the use of prescription pain medication, recover properly after surgery, and improve their mobility, fitness, and even sports performance.
