Leadership can sometimes mean getting down in the dirt, and that is part of what the Jeffer- son High National Honor Society did in early May. As part of their annual leadership workshop gathering, NHS members cleaned the landscape along Interstate 15 from the Boulder interchange north. Protected by a safety presentation and assist from Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy Dave Kosola, the students picked up trash and debris from mile marker 165 to 166, a portion of the four miles the club maintains.
In the afternoon members of the Recruiting and Retention Battalion from the Montana Army National Guard talked with the students about leadership. SSG Justin Clement, a JHS graduate and standout football player from his high school years, and recruiter SGT Chance McDowell then conducted an active shooter training. It was the first time the Guard group had done the training, which helps participants understand how best to react when they are faced with an active shooter, with students. Teachers at most of the area’s schools have gone through the training.
“The training was very informative and the students said it was definitely worthwhile,” said NHS advisor Steve McCauley. Other Guardsmen who participated in the leadership events included CSM Rick Haerter, who delivered a leadership talk, and LTC Chad Roudebush, whose daughter Madi and son Reese attend JHS.
