“Two weeks of work all gone in 90 seconds.” That is how Boulder Kiwanian Eric Rykal described the annual Easter Egg Hunt held in Boulder Saturday. After an enthusiastic cry of “Happy Easter,” scores of area youngsters darted onto the Jefferson County courthouse lawn Saturday at noon to vacuum up the prize-filled eggs.
According to Rykal, 1800 eggs were available and $1500 in prizes went out to the lucky hunters. Kites, plastic bats, frisbees, bubble soap, balloons, stuffed animals, blankets and more were all accepted with broad smiles from the children. Those smiles were matched by the volunteers handing out the special gifts. Young people leading the pack seemed to have perfected a “step, stoop, scoop, step, stoop, scoop” rhythm that kept them moving forward to collect the eggs.
On the section of lawn designated for preschoolers and kindergartners, the going was a bit slower, often with mom and dad encouraging the somewhat reluctant seekers to bend over to grab the egg. Then, of course, there were the little ones who were perfectly satisfied with a single egg or who did not want to relinquish their treasure to satisfy the adults’ curiosity about what prizes were inside. All in all, though, the event went well, and by twenty minutes after the starting signal the courthouse lawn was once again deserted except for the workers who were storing plastic eggs and smiling over yet another successful Boulder Easter Egg Hunt.
