State considers possible women’s prison in Boulder

The Riverside Special Needs Unit in 2019. The state Department of Corrections plans to discuss the possibility of building a new women’s prison nearby.

The Montana Department of Corrections (DOC) is considering Boulder, and three other communities, for the site of a potential new women’s prison.

At a meeting Mar 12 with the Butte Silver Bow County Commission, DOC Director Brian Gootkin said that the department was eyeing possible sites in Butte, Anaconda-Deer Lodge, and Yellowstone County, in addition to Boulder.

In a statement responding to The Monitor’s inquiry, DOC Communications Director Carolynn Stocker wrote, “Montana’s female inmate population continues to grow and it is critical that we work with the Governor’s Office, legislators, and our partners in the community to find a long-term solution.”
