As the school year enters its last month, spring sports are also heading toward their season end.
Golf will be the first to enter the post-season at the divisional tournament set for Monday, May 8, in Bozeman the the Cottonwood golf course beginning at 9 a.m. The JHS golfers competed on that course last week, where Josh Eckmann shot a 91 and Taden Hanson scored a 114. The team also got in some play at the Old Works course in Anaconda. Eckmann shot a 103, Andy Johnson at 115, Cole Oie a 129 and Jan- son a 136 on the Arnold Palmer designed course. This week the varsity will be at Three Forks on Thursday for a 10 a.m. start, the last regular season event before the divisional
TRACK AND FIELD The Panther track and field teams were in Bozeman last Saturday for the large Manhattan Christian meet. The JHS boys took eighth with 30 points. Avery Stiles won the high jump at 5’10”, Josh Eckmann tied for second at 5’8” and took 4th in the triple jump at 39’ 1/2”. Noah Fader took second in the javelin with a throw of 142’1” and Dalton Rykal took 6th in the shot put with a throw of 38’ 3”.
The Panther girls took 7th with 5 points, led by Emma Stout who took 4th in the pole vault at 7’. Although results of the May 2 Top 8 Meet in Anaconda were not available at press time, the Panthers were scheduled to be well-represented by athletes who had to have one of the best eight finishes in their event in the area to qualify. Nine Panther boys qualified in 14 events and eight Panther girls qualified in nine events.
Those boys qualifying: Mead Blake in the 100, 200 and 400; Hunter Henschel in the 800; Carter Mc- Cauley in the 110 hurdles; Josh Eckmann in the 300 hurdles, high jump and triple jump; Avery Stiles in the 300 hurdles, high jump and triple jump; Drake Schake in the discus; Noah Fader in the javelin; Eric Lufkin in the pole vault; and Kieran Eveland in the pole vault.
For the Lady Panthers, qualifiers were Hayden Henschel in the 100 and 200; Austin Thackeray in the 200; Quinn Mann in the 400; Callie Warfle in the 400; Emma Stout in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and the pole vault; Aubrey McMaster in the javelin; Simonie Mendenhall in the high jump; and Ashley Pankratz in the triple jump.
TENNIS The tennis courts in Boulder were busy last week as the Panthers hosted the Dawg Bite Tournament April 28 & 29. The local girls took on Poplar and Chinook, splitting the out- come with Poplar 3-3 and losing to Chinook 5-1. JHS singles players Breanna Humphrey and Olea Saevik came up with wins against Poplar. Humphrey’s match was one of the tightest of the entire tournament. After losing the first set in a tiebreaker, she came back to take the next two sets 6-4 and 10-7. Saevik found her match much easier going as she dominated the match 6-1 and 6-2.
Teammates Antonia Rekke and Emma Harrison came up short in their matches, though Rekke’s match was close. After winning the first set 6-4, she lost narrowly in the next two, 7-5 and 10-8. Harrison was outplayed 6-4 and 6-3. In doubles competition, Latrice and Leah Vossler easily handled their Poplar opponents, 6-1 and 6-1.
Jadyn Bellander and Laurynn Armstrong found the going a bit tougher as they lost 6-2, 6-2. The contest with Chinook was much harder on the Panthers, as only Abbey Supalla was able to capture a victory, 6-4, 6-2. Saevik’s match started with a 6-3 loss to her Chinook opponent before Saevik recovered with a 6-0 win in set two. The deciding set went to Chinook, 10-8. No other Panther players were able to record more than 3 games in any set from the talented Chinnook squad. The JHS tennis girls were in Whitehall on May 2 and will be in Choteau on May 5 and 6. The divisional meet is in Big Sky on May 11-13.
