Snowpack up from last year, but still low

While the county felt the coldest temperatures of the season so far this past week, snow levels in the mountains generally remain below median levels for the year.

According to data from U.S Agriculture Department’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, the snowpack on Jan. 20 at Rocker Peak was at 28 inches, or 79% of the snow-water equivalent median from 1991-2000, the baseline used by the service.

Tizer Basin measured about 25 inches, or 85% of the median. Frohner Meadow, at an elevation of 6520 feet, had 17 inches of snow, or 79% of the median.
