Sheriff’s Office plans use of advanced drone

Drones are no longer just for food deliveries and spying on the neighbors. The addition of an advanced thermal-imaging drone may soon significantly expand the capabilities of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and other county agencies. 

At their Apr. 22 meeting, County Commissioners are expected to decide whether to use $15,000 in Title III funds to implement an unmanned aircraft system, commonly known as a drone. 

Sheriff Tom Grimsrud told The Monitor the drone would have several uses: aiding search and rescue operations and expanding search areas; tracking suspects and fugitives into inaccessible locations, such as the mountains; and surveying potentially dangerous situations before putting officers at risk.
