School choice or consolidation? Basin and HB 203

At the Basin school board’s Oct. 8 meeting, resident Jack Lundberg reminded the board that Superintendent Sarah Eyer had described House Bill 203, which passed in 2023, as seeking to consolidate Montana’s public education system.

“Consolidation was never even a part of this [bill],” said Lundberg. “So why was she representing to the community that this was a ‘consolidation bill’?”

Board Chair Shannon Phillips responded calmly. “I don’t know why she would call it that – if she did,” said Phillips, describing the bill as focused on school choice. “I was never under the impression that it was a consolidation. That’s never been anything in my consideration, and it is not our intention to close the school.”
