Rep. DeVries sounds one dimensional

I am concerned that newly elected Rep. Greg DeVries as quoted in the Jan. 9 Monitor is sounding very one dimensional. He states that government “should be there to prevent crime and punish crime, basically.”

In my experience, government or self-governance is one of the most complicated, nuanced, ever-changing activities that humans can engage in. When I think of government I think of snow plows, schools, highways, emergency technicians, volunteer firefighters and environmental protection, to name a few.

He has stated that his agenda at the state legislature is to promote a “personhood amendment.” If this is a representative form of government, where does my voice and the voices of the 43 percent of voters that did not vote for him, find representation? Will Mr. DeVries be holding meetings so that others can participate in the legislation that affects our lives?
