Rep. DeVries, how shall we achieve your moral society?

This is a response to Rep. Greg Devries’s column, “A self-governed and moral society needs not a taxing government,” in last week’s Boulder Monitor.

First, what does a self- “governed” and moral society look like? Do all people love another? Are there no selfish rich people who hoard money? Is there no one who robs, kills, commits adultery, and no one who starts wars in far-away places? Is there no need for money or a military? Will everyone barter for their needs, and give away their surpluses to the poor, if they even exist in your perfect moral society?

Will all people go to church on Sundays and read only one book – the Bible? People will govern themselves, but will they have no city council meetings – build no water systems, build no roads, no schools, raise no taxes, have no government?
