It is obvious that if conservatives were only as brilliant as liberals, we would quickly embrace the joys of socialism. We would put our trust in ever-growing government bureaucracy, happily working toward that glorious utopia where individuals need no longer make any decisions for themselves, where the rich would happily hand over their wealth to the downtrodden masses who of course would use that money in a sensible and caring manner to improve their lives and that of their families, where sunny-faced children of all colors play safely and happily in the streets together, where our entire lives are benevolently controlled by a nameless, faceless, unelected bureaucrat who would toil tirelessly to make our lives better.
Sorry, I just can’t buy into that. In my 3/4 of a century of living, I’ve learned that only a very few people are truly interested in my welfare. Most simply could not care less. Employment by a government agency certainly does not improve that sad fact. In fact, I think that government employment often only increases people’s natural tendency to take care of themselves first. I’ve had the misfortune to have to deal with various government offices in my life. The normal reaction to whatever service I may require is apathy, ignorance, or sometimes obvious scorn. Think Amtrak, where trains run consistently late, or the post office that charges more for less service than its privately owned competitors. Think government contracts that cost far more than comparable private jobs simply because of the added unnecessary regulations and overbearing incompetence of their inspectors. Think the VA, where our deserving veterans die waiting for much needed and richly deserved care. Think DMV, where we stand in line for hours while the workers watch the clock, hoping their break comes before they must reluctantly lower themselves to do their job. Liberals (socialists) seem to want ever more of this disservice. Thanks but no thanks!
Bryher Herak stated in the Dec. 4 Boulder Monitor that the media often mischaracterizes what Democrats are all about. Probably so, but please look at the other side of that coin.
