DEQ Seeks Public Input on Boulder’s Cottage #5 Cleanup Alternatives

HELENA — The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is seeking public x on several options for cleanup of a contaminated structure on the property of Cottage #5 in Boulder, Montana, on Venture Way.

The cleanup options are presented in a document known as the Analysis of Brownfields Cleanup Alternatives, or ABCA, which was prepared to address abatement of hazardous materials within the building. Specific goals of the ABCA include maintaining a safe operating environment and cleaning up the property to allow for future redevelopment. Preparation of the ABCA involved collaboration between Jefferson County, the Montana DEQ Brownfields Program, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Brownfields Program.

Cleanup alternatives identified in the ABCA include:

1. Taking no abatement action,

2. Abatement of all asbestos containing materials (ACM), lead-based paint (LBP), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and encapsulation of crawlspace soils with reinforced concrete roll (RCR), or

3. Abatement of all ACM, LBP, PCBs, and crawlspace abatement with soil removal.

DEQ is accepting public comments on the ABCA through June 6, 2024. For more information or to review the ABCA and associated documents, visit DEQ’s website at: https://deq.mt.gov/public/publiccomment
