Panthers finally get in a full schedule of events

For the first time this spring, the Jefferson High sports teams were able to get in their full schedule of events, thanks to the cooperation of Mother Nature.

The golfers competed in Anaconda and Ennis. At Anaconda, Josh Eckmann carded a 97 to lead the Panthers. Cole Oie was close behind with a 101, followed by Gabe Gilmore at 108, Andy Johnson at 116 and Taden Hanson at 124. Natalee Stout shot a 127.

Only two Panthers were able to make the trip to Ennis. Oie shot a 96 and Stout a 126.

This week the varsity players are scheduled to compete in Three Forks on Thursday with a 10 a.m. start. That will finish out the very short regular season.

The divisional meet is at Bigfork May 8 and State is at Shepherd Tuesday and Wednesday, May 15-16.

TRACK AND FIELD

The track teams were able to get in two meets for the week. The first was in Helena for the Small Schools Meet. Josh Eckmann was a double winner, taking first in the high jump at 6’ 1” and first in the 300 hurdles in 42.14. Avery Stiles, who had cleared 6’ 7” in the high jump at the previous outing came in second with a leap of 5’ 11”.

The JHS 400 meter relay team took third in 46.36 behind Capital High and Helena High. Drake Schake earned points for the Panthers with a third place finish in discus at 118’ 7”. Ryan Nelson also got on the board in that event with a toss of 111’ 1”.

Casey St. Clair added to the Panther tally with a second in the long jump at 18’ 1”.

As a team, the JHS boys finished in fourth with 64 points.

The JHS girls matched their counterparts with 64 points, finishing fourth among the girls’ teams.

Ashley Pankratz collected points in both the long jump and the triple jump. Her long jump of 14’ 1” was good for fourth and a triple jump of 31’ 2” earned her third in that event.

Hailee Stiles ran the 100 in 14.09 to take fourth. In the 100 meter hurdles, Grace Alexander cleared the course in 17.68 for third place.

The Jefferson girls had a good day in the relays, taking second in both the 400 and 1600 in times of 53.79 and 4:40.07, respectively.

Callie Warfle sent the javelin flying 93’ 3” for a third place in that event.

Saturday the teams traveled to Bozeman for the Manhattan Christian meet. Under sunny skies, the Panthers garnered points in a wide range of events.

Hailee Stiles took 5th in the 200 in 28.57 and 6th in the triple jump at 31’ 3”. Callie Warfle took 2nd in the 400 in 1:05.88 and 3rd in the javelin at 101’ 10”. Grace Alexander took 4th in the 100 hurdles in 17.93 and 4th in the 300 hurdles in 51.56. Ashley Pankratz took 6th in the long jump at 14’ 9”, Aubrey McMaster took 4th in the javelin at 96’ 6”, and Olivia Lyon took 4th in the shot put with a throw of 30’ 6”. The 4 X 400 relay team of Grace Alexander, Callie Warfle, Aubrey McMaster and Ashton Oxarart took 3rd in 4:36.37.

For the boys Nate Brunett won the 100 in 11.50, a time that qualified him for that event at State, and won the 200 in 23.59. Carter McCauley took 5th in the 110 hurdles in 18.13, Avery Stiles won the high jump at 6’ 2”, and Drake Schake took second in the discus at 120’ 9.50”. Ryan Nelson took 4th in the discus at 113’ 8.50” and 4th in the javelin at 134’ 11”. Dalton Rykal took 5th in the shot put at 40’ 6.25”. The 4 X 100 relay team of Nate Brunett, Richie Canzona, Jaxson Yanzick and Hunter Henschel took 5th in 46.94.

Athletes who have times or distances in the top 8 in the area were in the Top 8 Meet in Anaconda on Tuesday, May 1. The last regular season meet of the season is this Saturday in Missoula for the Seeley-Swan meet. Action starts at 10 a.m. at Big Sky High School.

The District 5B Track and Field Meet is in Belgrade on Friday, May 11. Divisional will be in Laurel on Thursday, May 17, and State is also in Laurel on Friday and Saturday, May 25 and 26.

TENNIS

The tennis team had a good week, playing Townsend on Thursday and competing in Helena at the Dawg Bite tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Against Townsend Renee Yu was the only Panthers singles player to prevail. She beat Jes Bernett 6-2, 6-2. Teammates Breanna Humphrey lost to Charlie Smith 0-6, 0-6, Kylie Marks lost to Amanda Bergsted 0-6, 0-6, and Abbie Supalla lost to Meg Saltzman 0-6, 4-6. In doubles Leah Vossler and Laurynn Armstrong made fairly easy work of defeating Becca Larson-Baylee Bister 6-3, 7-5. Rounding out the Panther results, Mikkie Boas and Quincee Starz took their second set handily but lost to Leah Schritz-Taylor Noyes 4-6, 6-0, 3-6.

In Helena Renee Yu won 3 and lost 2, Breanna Humphrey won 3 and lost 2, Kylie Marks won 2 and lost 2, Mikkie Boes won one, and Jayden Bellander won 1 and lost 2. The doubles team of Leah Vossler and Laurynn Armstrong came close to a perfect outing, winning 5 and losing only 1. Quincee Starz and Abbie Supalla won 3 and lost 2, Breanna Humphrey and Kylie Marks won one, and Mikki Boas and Renee Yu won one.

The regular season for tennis ends this week when the Panthers travel to Choteau for Beast of the East tournament on Friday and Saturday. Divisional tennis is at Belgrade Thursday and Friday, May 10 and 11 with Saturday the 12th reserved in case of rain/snow delay. State is in Great Falls Thursday through Saturday, May 17-19.
