On Veterans Day, recalling the heroes

As I sit here and reflect on Veterans Day and the heroes and those who served and are still serving, I think about my own family.

My great uncle, John Bergost, served in World War I. He was Gen. John J. Pershing’s hand-picked man. He was awarded a medal for his service in the Battle of Argonne,  and received the Purple Heart after being wounded in Germany. That was over 100 years ago.

Our son Tony received the Purple Heart for a traumatic brain injury in Afghanistan. He was on bomb patrol and hit a bomb that the spotter hadn’t seen. I got a call at 2:30 a.m. from an officer telling me what had happened.
