No primary election to be held for mayor

Unlike previously reported in the Monitor, no September primary election will be held for the city mayor in Boulder. Three candidates – incumbent Gary Craft, Russell (Rusty) Giulio, and Lori Smith – filed for election to the four-year term. All three will be advancing to the general election ballot in November.

Montana law provides the option for no primary if “the number of candidates for an office exceeds three times the number to be elected to that office in no more than one-half of the offices on the ballot and the number of candidates in excess of three times the number to be elected is not more than one for any office on the ballot.”

Since no other office on the city ballot exceeded three times the openings, a primary is not required. The city could have required a primary election by notifying the county election administrator of that choice within ten days after the close of filing.
