No one was injured in an early morning fire that consumed three mobile homes, an RV and a couple vehicles at a Whitehall junkyard Saturday.
First responders were dispatched to what was described as a large fire at the Freeman Junkyard near the intersection of Kountz Road and Piedmont Road at 4:04 a.m. Saturday, Whitehall Volunteer Fire Chief Jeremy Ward said Monday by email.
The fire involved three trailer houses, an RV and “a couple vehicles mainly used for storage,” Ward wrote, noting that all were unoccupied at the time of the fire.
Ward wrote that the cause and origin of the fire were undetermined, but firefighters believe it could have been caused by an electric heater in the RV.
The damaged items were considered a total loss, he wrote.
Five Whitehall volunteer firefighters responded to the alarm with two engines and one water tender, Ward wrote. They were joined by a crew of five from Home Atherton Volunteer Fire Department and a crew of six from Boulevard Volunteer Fire Department, with each department sending one engine and one water tender. A Jefferson Valley EMS Ambulance crew of two also responded.
Ward wrote that the Whitehall crew returned to the station after about seven hours after leaving, though three firefighters returned to the scene mid-afternoon with an engine and water tender to check for hot spots.
