The City of Boulder is in the process of finalizing plans for a two-phased water system improvement effort, which would add two new wells to its public water supply. The project was first announced in January, and is being planned and executed by Helena engineering firm Morrison Maierle.

“We’re making meaningful progress on our plans for the water supply, but there are still many details we need to figure out before we start any new construction,” said Boulder city administrator Brian Bullock. Bullock also stated that, while Boulder currently has two operational wells, four are necessary to ensure the city’s water security.

The two presently functional wells are on 3rd Avenue and 4th Avenue, in close proximity to Boulder Elementary School. The city’s third and fourth wells, placed near Jefferson High School and Little League Park, respectively, were disconnected in 2010 due to detected copper excesses and the prohibitively high cost of corrective corrosion control treatment. While the third well will remain disconnected indefinitely, phase one of the water system improvement project will either repair or redrill the fourth well (Well Four).
