New parking lot in the works for Clancy School

Facing persistent concerns about safety, slow-moving traffic, and a lack of spaces, the Clancy School will overhaul its parking lot in a $410,000 project set to begin June 3.

The new lot, designed by Stahly Engineering and Associates, will include a dedicated lane for buses and reduce the number of entrances to two from three. It also will add 50 spaces to the east of the school building, freeing up space in front of the building to improve flow, especially in the busy times just before school starts and after it ends and during special events.

“When we have any kind of activity here, it’s almost dangerous for kids to walk across,” said Clancy superintendent Dave Selvig. “You don’t know where the cars are coming from.”

To create room for the new spaces, an existing soccer field will be moved to inside the running track, and basketball courts will be shifted further north toward Clancy Creek.

The project also will correct poor drainage that has caused damage to the asphalt surface. “Our pavement now is in really poor shape,” Selvig said. The lot will be regraded so that water flows into multiple grates that drain to the east. In addition, sidewalks leading to the school will be brought into compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

The construction contract, awarded to Bullock Contracting LLC, totals about $360,000, Selvig says. Engineering costs brings project costs to about $410,000. Selvig and principal Kendra Fanning said the project is being financed with monies from the school district’s miscellaneous and general funds, without a tax increase.

The construction is scheduled to take approximately 60 days, making the new lot available before the start of the 2019-2010 school year.
