New County crime stats suggest uptick in felonies

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office released, to The Monitor, some additional historical crime statistics last week, painting an overall picture of what types and the frequency of felonies deputies have investigated since 2021.

In general, Jefferson County remains a relatively crime-free community, although some of the felony numbers might be trending in the wrong direction. The Monitor published an expose on current crime statistics on Feb. 12, and since received this data.

Year to year comparisons suggest a slight upward trend in felony crimes since the pandemic. In 2021, JCSO deputies filed 115 felony charges with the county attorney. In 2022, in the midst of COVID-19, the total number of felony crimes dropped to 105. In 2023, as pandemic restrictions were eased, the total number rose to 135. Last year the Sheriff’s Office filed 165 felony charges.
