A sure sign that the winter sports season is nearing is the appearance of new scoreboards and shot clocks in the Jefferson High gyms. We’re  just doing some fine tuning to make sure they’re ready to work at the first basketball games and wrestling meet.

Speaking of which: The first home wrestling mixer is Thursday, Dec. 8 in the north gym, start time 6 p.m. A large group of wrestlers is practicing now and this should be a great year for the Panthers. They kick off the season this weekend, Dec. 2-3, in Cascade.

Both the boys and girls basketball teams return a lot of players. The JV and varsity teams will be in Red Lodge Dec. 9-10 for a season-opening tournament — a good way to start the year, as they will see teams they normally wouldn’t face until the postseason.

The Panthers will host Whitehall on Dec. 15, then travel to Anaconda on Dec. 16 and host Manhattan on Dec. 17. They will finish out 2022 by hosting Three Forks on Dec. 20 and Choteau on Dec. 21. The cheerleaders have also been practicing and are ready to get the Panther fans fired up.

After great seasons by the football, cross country and volleyball squads, it will be great to watch winter sports. This is my 32nd year of writing the Sports Plus column, and I look forward to every season. Always great kids who do outstanding jobs supporting and representing Jefferson High School. Go Panthers!
