National Honor Society induction celebrated

Eighteen students were inducted into the Jefferson High School National Honor Society on April 16. Those students, along with the previously inducted NHS members, represent the best JHS has to offer in scholarship, service, leadership and character.

Those four principals are the basis of the National Honor Society and they were emphasized in the induction ceremony with a pledge, a candle lighting ceremony, the presentation of pins and certificates, and the words of guest speaker Mary Williams, JHS science teacher.

The goals have also been drummed into the NHS members over their high school years by the group’s advisors for the past 15-16 years, Victoria Foster and Steve McCauley. Foster, who is retiring at the end of the school year, will be missed, said McCauley.

“There will definitely be some adjusting for me next year,” he said. “Mrs. Foster worked very hard her entire career to better our school and the Jefferson High Chapter of the National Honor Society. Not only is she a dedicated teacher and a good friend, but an inspiration to others to always work hard and do what is right, even if no one is looking.”

Cathy Carey, who has been working with the NHS advisors this year, will replace Foster at the helm. “Mrs. Carey will be a great addition to NHS,” said McCauley.

Officers of the JHS chapter of NHS, President Noah Anspach, Vice President Britton Peterson, Treasurer Leah Vossler and Secretary Ellie Evertz, welcomed the new inductees to the group and explained the standards by which NHS members are expected to conduct themselves.

Thirteen senior NHS members were presented with honor cords in recognition of their accomplishments. The seniors were Anspach, Peterson, Vossler, Evertz, Jadyn Armstrong, Jeremias Auch, Josh Eckmann, Hayden Giusti, Emily McGinnis, Aubrey McMaster, Natalee Stout, Katy Twichel and Ellie Youde.

The new inductees included thirteen sophomores, three juniors and two seniors: sophomores Laurynn Armstrong, Hadassah Auch, Millie Elbert, Kylie Marks, Carter McCauley, Ryan Nelson, Ashton Oxarart, Taylor Peterson, Kati Preskar, Emme Rosenbaum, Ethan Smartnick, Avery Stiles and Josiah Williams; juniors Alexia Winstead, Haylee Wood and Gabriel Gillmore; and seniors Jadyn Armstrong and Aubrey McMaster.

Other members of the NHS, all juniors, are Mattie Brustkern, Carsen Dodge, Kathryn Fowler, Bryce Harrington, Simonie Mendenhall, Olivia Pegram, Abby Rosenbaum, Kaela Rosenbaum, Drake Schake, Emma Stout, Callie Warfle and Samuel Williams.

“We will miss our senior class next year and want to thank them for the leadership and service they displayed in the school and community,” said McCauley.

“We are excited to work with our returning juniors and new members next year,” he added.
