The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) held a Memorial Day service at Veterans Park in Boulder this Monday. The service was held in coordination with the National Moment of Remembrance, which is a moment of silence held in recognition of U.S. veterans who’ve died in military service.
“The National Moment of Remembrance gives every American the opportunity to recognize the sacrifice of those who’ve served,” said VFW and American Legion Adjutant Cory Sena. Sena served in the Army for 23 years before retiring, and has since been involved with both organizations. While both groups focus on advancing veteran causes and providing community services, only those who have experienced combat are qualified to join the VFW.
As part of the Memorial Day service, Eliza McLaughlin, a field representative for the office of U.S. Senator Steven Daines, presented a statement on the senator’s behalf.
“Today, may we be reminded that the sacrifices made by our military in past conflicts secured liberty, but they do not guarantee its permanence,” wrote Sen. Daines. “Freedom’s job will never be done. Our commitment to protecting this sacred gift sets us apart as a beacon of democracy and requires each of us to remain vigilant and be willing to intercede when necessary.”
