When the State MathCounts competition is held at Montana Tech March 9, Jefferson County will be well represented. Both the first-place team and the first place individual from the Southwest Regional Competition in Butte last month come from Jefferson County schools.
Approximately 50 sixth through eighth grade students from six schools – Boulder, Clancy, Montana City, Butte Central, Deer Lodge and Dillon – participated in the regional meet. Competing in written exams and head-to-head competition, including a “Jeopardy”-style countdown round, the students pushed themselves to maximize their math talents.
Top individual honors were captured by Abbie Youde, a Boulder eighth-grader. After a runner up from Deer Lodge, the three remaining individual winners were all from Montana City. Lenny Triem took third, Reece Johnson fourth, and Emily Knickerbocker fifth. A Montana City team made up of Triem, Brooke Ark, Aimee Wilkerson and Ben Vince topped the team finishes. Boulder finished third as a team through the efforts of Youde, Gracie Leiva, Grace Alexander and Meadow Grace, and Clancy took fourth.
