Long-time JHS coach honored for college football career

Boulder resident and long- time Jefferson High coach Mike Charlton was honored as part of the 1967 University of Montana Western football team over the weekend. The team, which earned Western its first Frontier League championship, was inducted into the college’s Hall of Fame at a ceremony Friday. 

An All-Conference tight end, Charlton had been inducted as an individual in 2000. Overall the 1967 Bulldog team posted a 6-1 season, including six straight wins after losing the season opener. The team capped its season with a 55-6 rout of Rocky Mountain College in the season’s finale.

Charlton was one of four offensive players and four defensive players on the team honored as All-Conference. Charlton coached a variety of sports over his decades as a teacher and coach at Jefferson High, including football, basketball and track. 

His wife Betty is also retired from teaching and coaching in Boulder. The couple continues to live in Boulder, where they have seen their children and grandchildren participate in athletic teams.
