A movie slated to play at the Boulder Community Library Wednesday night, August 16, will give locals a chance to explore WWII history and the story of one of the nation’s first female aviators.
“Tora! Tora! Tora!” dramatizes the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The movie is open to everyone at no charge and begins at 6:30 p.m. Library backers decided to show the film after a recent article in the Monitor about Cornelia Clark Fort, reportedly the first pilot to encounter a Japanese flyer on the fateful day and the first female pilot to lose her life in service to the military.
Fort was a flight instructor at Hawaii when the attack began. She successfully evaded an approaching Japanese aircraft and dodged bullets once on the ground. Later in World War II she transported aircraft for the military and died in a crash while on duty. The Interstate Cadet she was piloting on Pearl Harbor Day is on display at the Heritage Flight Museum in the Seattle area.
