Learning the ropes on the XC Ranch

Mason Nussbaum, 21, is a natural resource and rangeland ecology major at Montana State University in Bozeman. This summer, she is part of a Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation internship for which she will travel to six different ranches in Montana over three months, spending two weeks at each.

From June 3 to June 14, she was at XC Ranch south of Boulder, helping with various things such as changing water lines and participating in “Range Day” on June 10. Nussbaum said the program lets ag majors who did not grow up on a ranch get a “leg up” in getting their degree. She said she might someday like to work on a ranch, as a range specialist or be something else entirely. One of the things she likes most about her major is that she can do many different things with it, she said.
