Landscaping? Go for old-fashioned mulch, not fabric

Wood mulch is great — but don’t overdo it. This “volcano” mulch pile, mounded high around a tree trunk, can cause damage. It’s better to extend the mulch to the tree’s drip line.

Landscaping season is in full swing. I have been landscaping professionally for the last 7 years. Unfortunately, some landscaping trends and myths are taking hold in certain areas, so I have made it my mission to help inform people, so they can make more educated decisions. Fair warning, parts of this article may come across as me getting up on my soapbox.

When I am renovating a landscape, the most dreaded thing I encounter is landscape fabric, also known as weed barrier. At face value, anything that says it will prevent weeds from coming to the surface must be a good thing, right? Unfortunately, it’s not; let me explain why. 

If you are not familiar with landscape fabric, it is a plastic or other synthetic material that comes in various widths and lengths. It is usually held in place with metal or plastic stakes, and rocks or various kinds of mulch are installed on top.
