With the best finish ever by a Jefferson High student in the annual Voice of Democracy speech contest, senior Craig Trammel was presented last week with a $1000 check for finishing second in the state of Montana.

The contest, sponsored by the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars), is overseen at Jefferson High by Larrey Lattin, who presented Trammel with his award. Smaller amounts of monetary awards were also presented to Trammel for winning the school and district level competitions, said social studies teacher Fritz Bieler.

“Larrey has been overseeing the contest at Jefferson High for over 25 years and the VFW has awarded thousands of dollars to Jefferson High students,” said Bieler.

The state winner received an all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., along with the chance to win a $30,000 scholarship.

The speech contest, with a different patriotic, historic or citizenship topic each year, is open to all high school students in Montana. This year’s theme was “American History: Our hope for the future.”

Guidelines for the Voice of Democracy contest can be found online or from Mr. Bieler.
