The month of February is upon us and the school year is moving into the second semester. The first semester was full of many successes for JHS students, ranging from academics to extracurricular.
There have been a number of events occurring with the students at JHS, but one of great significance was the recent Strategic Planning session held Tuesday, January 24. The afternoon of the 24th consisted of a Strategic Planning session involving the school board, administration, faculty, staff, and the entire JHS student population. It is believed to be the first planning session of this type involving the entire student population. The session was organized into 15 groups consisting of a mix of school board members, administration, faculty, staff, and students.
A series of questions were given to prompt discussion on what can occur to make JHS better, what seems to be working, what needs more work, and what is best for meeting the needs of JHS students. Following a couple of hours of this small group activity, the groups were brought together in the gyms and student facilitators presented to the whole group what they had discussed. After each presentation, there was a question and answer session.
The information collected from the 15 groups was then put into a database to be used for the future planning of the Jefferson High School district. Surveys will be generated for additional information and plans will be developed to address improvements for JHS. All involved need to be commended on a great afternoon of dialog and discussion. The voices have been heard and from it will come growth for the district.
At the recent Montana High School Association meeting, Jefferson High School Activities Director Dan Sturdevant was chosen as the Class B Activities Director of the year for 2016-17. Dan is well-deserving of this award. Dan can be found at all JHS activities both home and away, and he also provides support with pictures and articles to the Boulder Monitor. Dan is a great supporter of student activities and the JHS school district.
Recently, the beginning drama put on the Grimm Brothers play which was quite successful.
The Business Professionals of America (BPA) recently competed at the district competition and came home with a number of awards.
This past Friday, Mr. Bowman took a number of students to Billings to compete in a Jazz Festival, and this group will also be providing entertainment on February 14th with a jazz dinner at the high school. Tickets are on sale now.
If you have been to the school recently, the Art Show is on display throughout the building. A variety of different art and crafts are displayed showing the wonderful talents of JHS students. There are many different fine arts represented, including paintings, photography, pottery, and 3D productions.
The winter sports schedule is winding down with the recent completion of Speech and Debate, wrestling divisional this week, and a couple of weeks until basketball divisionals. Go, Panthers!
