JHS golf, tennis and track teams take wins across state

The Jefferson boys easily won a meet in Ennis on Apr. 25, their 311 points besting host Ennis, with 343, Manhattan, 356, Deer Lodge, 375, Three Forks, 378, Manhattan Christian, 388, Townsend, 428, and Whitehall, 429.

Tyson Lee led the Panthers, carding a 74 for first place. Ben Werner finished second with a  75, Keyan Coate tied for 4th with  80, Marcus Lee scored 82, and Jarron Henrich finished at 113.

The Lady Panthers didn’t have enough golfers for a team score, but Eryn Lindsay carded a 100, Mryah Lindsay 106, and Shae Jones-Moore 111. Lone Peak won the girls title with a 406 total; Three Forks finished at 415, Townsend at 452, and Whitehall at 544.

Tennis

As the post-season nears, the Panther tennis team traveled to Red Lodge on Apr. 26. The doubles team of Addie Leary and Clara Genger took on a strong Red Lodge team and came out with a 6-3, 6-4 win. Holly Keough and Grace Day also won in doubles play, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

In singles Genger lost 3-6, 2-6, and Day lost 5-7, 4-6 and then 4-6, 4-6. Myle O’Neill also lost 2-6, 2-6, This week the squad will be in Helena for the Dawg Bite tournament Friday and Saturday; it will host the Panther Invitational the following weekend.

Track and Field

The Panther track and field teams drove down the road for the John Tomich Invitational meet in Butter on Saturday, Apr. 27. With several key athletes sitting out their top events, the boys finished 5th out of seven schools, with 66 points. Beaverhead County won the meet with 130 points; Frenchtown finished second with 123.

The girls’ squad placed fourth, with 52 points. Beaverhead County finished on top with 199 points.

The individual boys’ results:

100 meters: Michael Richard 6th, 12:21; Caleb Morris 11th, 12:62. 200 meters: Aaron French 8th, 25.34. 400 meters: Jack Johnson 3rd, 55:85. 800 meters: French 2nd, 2:00.77; Caelum Dunn 8th, 2:33.86; Steel Hansing 14th, 2:54.76. 1600 meters:  Luke Mest 1st, 4:35.69; Dominic Hurlbert 2nd, 4:47.98; Logan Hornung 4th, 4:54.97; Christian Gillmore 7th 5:25.13; Caelun Dunn 13th 5:53.37.

110 hurdles: Luke Mondloch 10th, 18:57; Luke Strizich 11th, 18:58. High jump: Colten Thornock 2nd, 5’ 8”. Long jump: Thornock 7th, 18’ 1.50”.

Shot put: Dalton Noble 1st, 50’ 6”; Dylan Stevens 3rd, 43’ 2”; Tavin Charlton 6th 41’ 8”; Kaynen Martin 10th, 38’; Luke Oxarart 12th, 36’ 9”. Discus: Noble 4th, 131’ 1”; Charlton 6th, 123’ 6”; Brady Armstrong 7th, 118’ 6”. Javelin: Johnson 9th, 99’ 11”.

The girls’ results:

100 meters: Clare Ronayne 4th, 13:57; Arena Faler 5th, 13:63; Nevayah Weninger 8th, 19:53; MacKenzie Layng 10th, 13:85; Erica Shields 17th, 14:86. 400 meters: Ronayne 6th, 1:06.22; Layng 7th 1:07.12; Faler 9th, 1:08.21. 1600 meters: Peyton Stearns 4th; 5:49.68; Maria Mest 9th 7:12.44; Addie Holman 10th, 7:50.10.

100 hurdles: Weinger 8th, 19:53. 4×100 relay, 1st, 52:23 (Maddy Averill, Ronayne, Layng, Faler).

High jump: Allison Zawacki 3rd, 4’ 6”. Long jump: Averill 1st, 15’ 6”; Ada Stearns 6th, 13’ 1/4”; Shields 7th, 12’ 11.50”

Shot put: Allie Muffick 5th, 27’ 9”. Discus: Muffick 8th, 79’ 9”. Javelin: Layng 2nd, 115’ 7”; Muffick 4th, 90’ 9”

The Panthers travel to Corvallis for a quad meet on May 3, then head to Belgrade May 9 for the District 5B meet — the start of the long road that leads to State, May 24-25 in Laurel.

Odds and Ends

USA Today reports that Montana is 12th in the nation in high school sports participation. According to the paper, 50.4% of boys in the state participate in high school sports, and 44.8% of girls, totalling 47.8% combined.

Maine was the highest in the survey, with 66.7% boys and 57.3% girls playing sports, 62.1% overall. Of Montana’s neighbors, Wyoming was at 55.6% for boys and 53.2% for girls; Idaho was at 40.3% boys and 30.1% for girls.
