The Jefferson High School District No. 1 School Board met June 18 to discuss a number of items that will go into effect in the coming school year. These include an upcoming report from SMA Architects, an anticipated student resource officer, a new software program being given to students at the school, a plan to raise ACT scores, changes to the student handbook and an application for the vacant Boulder-area position on the board.

Superintendent Tim Norbeck reported that the report from SMA architects, based on responses to a survey of Jefferson High School District No. 1 residents conducted last month, will be ready by the end of July. The report is expected to help the board decide how to respond to the district’s anticipated population growth.

According to Norbeck, the school has been working to get a part-time student resource officer — a police officer who interacts with students and staff and deals with security or safety issues — at the school. Norbeck said he got the idea from other schools and thinks it will be good to familiarize the students with a law enforcement official they don’t fear. The school is still working out some details but Norbeck said the officer should be in place by the beginning of this coming school year.
