Jail meals, banking contracts focus of commission

With the start of a new fiscal year about three weeks away, the Jefferson County Commission awarded contracts for the provision of jail meals and banking services June 6. Each contract was sought by two bidders, and discussion of the pros and cons of each was lengthy. 

Boulder River Pizza and Subs, which has held the jail meals contract, submitted a bid of $5.08 per meal. Farmer’s Table, which opened its door earlier this year, bid $3.75 per meal. The wide divergence prompted discussion. Neither bidder was present for the debate. 

Sheriff Craig Doolittle said that after bid opening a week earlier he spoke with both about expectations under the two-year contract, which included the use reusable containers instead of styrofoam previously used and the need to deliver meals on time 365 days a year. After his discussions, said Doolittle, Farmer’s Table said they stood by their low bid.
