It may seem early to observe Wildfire Awareness Month in May, but fire officials say it is the right time to think about the upcoming season and ways to prepare. The Blacktail Canyon Fire about four miles southeast of Butte, detected May 24, is a good reminder that wildfires can pop up any time this time of year. The fire grew to about 4-5 acres, according to forest officials.
Wildland fire safety, community preparedness, hazardous fuels mitigation, and fire prevention should not be left to the last minute, fire officials said. Residents in areas with a potential for wildfires can impact the risk and severity of wildfires and reduce deaths, injuries and property losses through their preparedness efforts.
