It’s 5:15 a.m. You’re asleep. They’re in ‘boot camp’

Between daylight savings, the holiday season and whispers of early winter chill, there are plenty of reasons this time of year for slow living and slower mornings. Frosted windshields, turkey-induced sluggishness and silent, long-lasting darkness all make for ready excuses to take these early hours easy.

But if you ask Jenn Hoover and her band of 5 a.m. fitness bootcampers, you’re just wasting daylight.

Those brave enough push past Jefferson High’s double doors on an early weekday morning find themselves swept into a scene of bustling invigoration: against a soundtrack of blood-pumping pop music, pairs of brightly clad workout partners buzz around the weight room, alternately lifting and sipping from Hydroflasks, correcting form and catching up with friends — checking more off their social calendars and personal improvement checklists alike by 6 a.m. than many will cover by dinnertime.
