Get behind recycling and make it easier

Why can’t we recycle plastic? How come I have to go all the way to the dump to recycle? Why might my taxes go up? What is the answer? REDUCE/REUSE/ RECYCLE

Recently a couple of my friends told me they don’t recycle because they don’t go to the dump. I was shocked. What an excuse. I told them to bring their recycles to my house. I already collect from other friends. Yesterday, I picked up one friend and took her and her recyclables to the dump with me. An educational and friendly visit.

What else can I do? I went to the Solid Waste presentation to the Jefferson County commissioners. I knew the statistics. I knew the time was coming. The Boulder Monitor carried the story on the front page. Public meetings to review the statistics. Their solution: Raise taxes. I agree! I want their services.

May 8-13, 2017 The Boulder Area Chamber of Commerce will support Recycling during City of Boulder Clean up Week. The Solid Waste Department is also offering its services. DEQ containers will be available for plastic and aluminum at several locations on Main Street. If you have a large quantity washed and lids remove.

Call BACC # 465-2106 and we will pick it up for you. How can you possibly reduce? Go to this site to learn the top 10 ways to reduce waste. rethinkrecycling.com/residents/reduce/ top-10-ways-reduce-waste

Many of these ideas, you already know. But how many of these ideas are you putting into action? What are the reasons you are not following through on these great ideas? Talk to someone in your community who is willing to help find solutions and put them into action.

The Boulder Area Chamber of Commerce is supporting Recycling by developing a committee of concerned citizens to brainstorm these ideas for our community. Please call Connie Grenz (225-3288) chair of this committee to get more information.

Editor’s Note: The Monitor did not report that the commissioners have decided to raise solid waste rates. The article mentioned by Grenz said the commissioners reported a need to review options because of increased waste, dwindling reserves and aging equipment. The article said, “Solving the problem will require some changes, said Wortman, perhaps in the form of a rate increase or maybe with the addition of a scale to enable charging by weight. “No meeting has been set yet, said the commission, but there will probably be public meetings to discuss options in late May or early June.”
