From 4-H auction to school lunches

Two buyer-businesses from the Boulder Outlaws’ record-setting 4-H animal auction at this year’s Jefferson County Fair decided to pay their generosity forward as part of a new program.

Last week, Gruber Excavating agreed to send the pork from its auction-bought, 330-lb hog to Boulder Elementary and Jefferson High, while Golden Eagle Construction gave the beef carved from its Grand Champion, 1140-lb steer to Clancy Elementary.

Every year, kids go home from the 4-H auction with funds for college or their next 4-H animal, while buyers leave with a feeling of generosity – and a good deal of meat. This program adds another layer of kindness, and the schools were delighted to receive all that fresh, free meat to serve to students and staff. The estimated 500 pounds of beef from the steer, for instance, could be used to make some 2500 burgers.
