Fire north of Boulder contained quickly by Jan Anderson, editor

A fire just northeast of Boulder was contained over the weekend after burning one-tenth of an acre, fire officials said. The fire in the Elkhorns about six miles northeast of town was one of about nine fires detected in southwest Montana after recent lightning activity. The largest of those fires, the Whetstone Ridge Fire at 195 acres and the Meyers fire at 45 acres, were in the Sapphire Mountains southwest of Philipsburg.

Both were listed at zero percent contained as of Sunday morning. A one acre fire 13 miles north of Butte dubbed the Browns Fire was being monitored. Fire officials were encouraging the public to report any fires to the Dillon Dispatch Center at 406-683-3975.

“With hot and dry weather predicted to continue through the week people are advised to be cautious with fire,” said a fire update press release. “If recreating outdoors, make sure your campfires are completely extinguished and cool to the touch before leaving. Stay on roads and make sure cigarettes are out.”
