Fire chief warns of extinguisher recall

Jefferson City Fire Chief Bud Siderits says he recently discovered that a fire extinguisher protecting his house had been recalled. Investigation led him to learn that the Kidde brand extinguisher was easily replaced, he says.

“It’s all online, pretty simple,” he says. No receipt is even needed, he says.

Here is the process Siderits found: On the Kidde.com website, click on the fire extinguisher recall option and then select the type, either plastic handle or push button. That leads to a list of the serial numbers and models of recalled equipment. By entering the model or serial number in the search box, extinguisher owners can find out if the extinguisher is subject to recall.

The site provides places to enter information needed to obtain a replacement, which takes about one to three weeks, says the fire chief.
