FINDING LITTLE TREASURES OUTDOORS ONLY PART OF THE FUN Geocaching class to be held at library

“Geocaching” – a game that uses GPS technology in a sort of hide and seek for outdoors enthusiasts – will be the topic of an August 5 class at the Boulder Community Library. The free class, taught by Billie Rudolph and other local geocachers, begins at 10 a.m.

The game has been growing in popularity, enticing folks of all ages to get out on treasure hunts, finding and logging caches – small trinkets – others have placed around the world. Local participants say there are beginning to be quite a few caches in and around Boulder as well as hundreds in the Helena and Butte areas. Geocachers often replace the items found in caches with “swag” – small, inexpensive items brought to trade and left behind for the next geocacher who comes along.

Anyone interested in participating in the free class at the library is encouraged to bring a GPS or a cell phone or smart phone with an app downloaded from geocaching. com. Those using the app will be prompted to sign in using a name by which to be known in the geocaching community. Participants are also encouraged to bring a pen or pencil and some “swag.” The game is great family fun, getting people into the outdoors with an excuse to exercise while enjoying nature, say enthusiasts.
