Questions were answered last week on how Jefferson High School will start sports this year. Jefferson High School met with the Health Board last week along with Whitehall High School and everyone agreed that COVID-19 is a threat that we all must take seriously. All in attendance agreed that whatever was sent down they would live with. On Thursday night, the schools received notice that all non-conference fall sports would not be played. That took three football games off Jefferson High School’s schedule and two off Whitehall’s schedule. Volleyball got hit the hardest with the schools losing seven matches. It was agreed by all that the number one priority was to do everything possible to get games while most importantly keeping the kids safe and healthy.
Whitehall and Jefferson have the same fan policy starting the year, no fans will be allowed from the out of town team and two people for each suited up player from the home team. Social distancing will be required. The schools certainly understand that this is not a rule that anyone likes, including the schools, but in the interest of trying to keep the virus from spreading it is the right thing to do. Other areas are not letting any fans in, a very few are going to let both teams fans in. If they can’t keep the numbers low on people testing positive, the rule will be changed to no fans and the possibility of canceling the entire season. Please take every precaution and abide by the rules, no one wants to see the seasons canceled.
Jefferson High School and Whitehall High School have agreed to play a football game on Sept. 4 in Whitehall, this game will not count on the standings or win-loss records for either team. The game will be played in Whitehall and will be broadcast on radio as well as on film that you will be able to watch on your cell phone or computer. All of the football games and volleyball games will be this way. Whitehall will travel to Jefferson on Sept. 29 for a volleyball match that will not count on the standings or win-loss records. Hopefully more matches can be found to fill in some of the lost ones.
